Social Circus: Art, Inclusion, and Youth Empowerment
By Luiza Adjuto
In this seminar, the artist and social educator shares her journey and experiences with social circus projects in Brazil, demonstrating how circus arts can be a powerful tool for inclusion, self-esteem, and transformation for young people in vulnerable situations.
The presentation offers practical examples of initiatives in marginalized neighborhoods, villages, and detention centers, highlighting the importance of creating safe spaces for expression, belonging, and the appreciation of local cultures. It also discusses challenges such as the risks of the “white savior” dynamic and suggests ways for allies to support social projects ethically, respectfully, and without reproducing colonial patterns.
This is an invitation to reflect on the role of circus in building a more just, diverse, and emancipated society.
Luiza Adjuto
Luiza is a circus artist from Brasília who is now based in Oslo. She graduated from the National Circus Institute in Portugal and studied Tourism and Sports Science at the University of Brasília.
Luiza started dancing at the age of seven, and a few years later, she discovered circus and extreme sports. She took part in various social projects, some autonomously and others in partnership with the University of Brasília.
She is passionate about movement, art, ecology, feminism, and books. And how to make art with philosophy and politics existence.
Luiza worked with two circus companies in Brazil, where she traveled and participated in festivals, circus tents, and circus gatherings across South America. She also had the opportunity to collaborate with performers, directors, and contemporary circus projects.
In Europe, Luiza worked with comedy and aerial performances and also collaborated with directors and cross-art projects. Currently, Luiza dedicates herself to artistic collaborations in Norway, as well as her artistic projects “Bloom” and her solo works “What’s-her-face” and “Dance where you can”.

Ghia Lumia
GHIA LUMIA (she/her) is a curious circus artist dedicated to continuous growth. She has delved into a versatile performing career, collaborating with international groups and festivals in Northern Europe—including Big Wolf Company (EE), Ilmatila ry (FI), Acting for Climate (NO), and Sirkus Faktori (FI). Recently, she has also led workshops and coordinated projects to advance contemporary circus field and especially creative acrobatics scenery in the cities of Helsinki and Oslo.
She is especially drawn to art’s capability to explore the inner realms of the mind and emotions, creating unique, ephemeral spaces. For Ghia, art is an invitation to think regardless of words—sometimes enticing, sometimes challenging—with an emphasis on playful associations, refined movement, tactile expression, authenticity, and vibrant visual and musical qualities.

FELICIA HEDMAN
Felicia Hedman (she/her) is an acrobat and dancer based in Finland, working at the intersection of technical precision and expressive, offbeat movement. With a background in gymnastics, circus, and contemporary dance, her training has taken her across France, Italy, Portugal, and Sweden—where she specialized in hand-to-hand, banquine, dance acrobatics, and trampoline.
Her practice is rooted in curiosity and a love for movement as a language of expression—raw, poetic, sometimes absurd. She’s especially drawn to the moments that fall outside traditional ideas of beauty: the awkward, the unpolished, the fall. She finds inspiration in theatricality and timing, having explored clowning in France and often gravitating towards the playful, the silly, and the out-of-context.
Felicia works with Opus Company and collaborates with Handsome Feet. She has performed in choreographies by Samir Calixto, Tijen Lawton, and Julio Iglesias Ungo, and has trained with Clotaire Foucheru, Jarkko Mandelin, Tia Balacey, and Brandon Lagaert—figures who have helped shape her multidisciplinary approach.
Deeply engaged in the Finnish circus and dance community, Felicia continues to explore new ways of creating and connecting through movement—always chasing what’s honest, unpredictable, and unapologetically human.

Description:
This is a movement-based workshop rooted in contemporary and abstract dance, with a focus on improvisation, imagery, and relationship to the floor. You’ll be invited to challenge habits, embrace awkwardness, and experiment with tools that can support your personal practice. While the floor will be a key partner, we’ll approach it with care—inviting softness, not force. This class is about listening, exploring, and moving in ways that might not always look “right”—but feel alive.
